LIDL Ireland is recalling a batch of two varieties of a popular product due to the possible presence of salt crystals.
These salt crystals are known as struvite and are naturally occurring – but could cause injury or be mistaken for glass fragments, food safety chiefs warn.The packet sizes are 3x80g and the batch has the best before date December 31, 2023.
Lidl confirmed in a statement on the Food Safety Authority of Ireland website that point-of-sale notices will be placed in Irish stores.
Shop bosses said: “Lidl Ireland is recalling two varieties of Sol & Mar Squid in Sunflower Oil because they may contain naturally occurring salt crystals, known as struvite, which may be mistaken as glass fragments.

Struvite crystals form during the production process of canned fish.
Lidl added: “As these salt crystals may cause injury, the product should not be consumed.
“Other Sol & Mar products are not affected by this recall. Our manufacturer Conservas Selectas de Galicia S.L. wish to apologise for this incident.”
Customers are advised: “If you have bought any of the above products do not eat them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.”

And the food giant recently urgently recalled packets of Cookie & Cream biscuits sold in Irish stores amid allergy fears.
